Thomas Mikkelsen emigrated to Chicago in 1887, about the time this restored portrait was taken. His first wife Helene Sievertsen and their children accompanied them. For unknown reasons Helene returned to Schleswig, taking the children with her, but the children gradually returned to Chicago to live . Thomas later married Maria Hansen, and after her death in 1902 he married the widowed Catherine Petersen in 1906. They had a daughter of their own, Florence, in 1907.
