It's been a winter of record cold, down into the mid-thirties Fahrenheit. Dormancy was the main
theme of the season. Roses and fuchsias sleep. A passel of nasturtiums sprouted but, lacking sunshine,
had no way to bloom. They await springtime. The only reliable bloomers have been camellias. Not even
the azaleas are out yet.
The primary effort put forward in the garden has been redesign of some paving, and the installation of
an entirely new woodland pathway behind the rose garden and underneath the Brazilian sky flower tree. Drooping
branches from the tree provide dappled shade, while birds-foot ferns, begonias, gardenias, and azaleas line
the pathway defined with redwood bark and white birch edging. Roses have been pruned and fuschsias repotted
in anticipation of spring. The big tasks are done.
